Those upon whom Hajj is Obligatory

The word Hajj means to wish. In the terminology of Islamic Sharia, the activities such as circumambulating the Kaaba, staying in Arafat and Muzdalifah are called Hajj. But who is this Hajj obligatory upon? What is the guidance of Islam in this regard?

Regarding the ability to perform Hajj, the Almighty God declares in the Holy Quran:

“And to Allah is the pilgrimage to the House, for whoever among mankind is able to make the journey, it is obligatory upon him.” (Surah Al-Imran: Verse 97)

Allah Almighty has made the Hajj of the Kaaba obligatory upon mankind with certain conditions. The condition is that one must be able to reach this House. What kind of ability should one have? Regarding the explanation of ability, it is said that the person who comes for the purpose of this house should have such an amount of money in addition to his family needs, with which he is able to bear the expenses of traveling to the Kaaba and staying there. In addition, he should also have arrangements to support his family until returning from the Kaaba. Again, he should be physically able to move around in his own house. Because, it is difficult for those who have these organs to move around in their own house. How will they perform the Hajj journey?

Therefore, it is obligatory for a physically and mentally healthy person, who is able to travel from his own country to the holy city of Mecca and can bear the necessary expenses of his family until returning from the Hajj, to perform Hajj once in his life.

How many types of Hajj and what are they

There are three types of Hajj: Tamattu, Ifrad, Qiran. Of these, the best in terms of reward is Qiran, then Tamattu, then Ifrad. However, in terms of ease of performance, Tamattu comes first, then Ifrad, then Qiran. There are three types of Hajj: Tamattu, Ifrad, Qiran. Of these, the best in terms of reward is Qiran, then Tamattu, then Ifrad. However, in terms of ease of performance, Tamattu comes first, then Ifrad, then Qiran. Tamattu Hajj is the easiest to perform, so most Bangladeshis perform Tamattu Hajj. And those who go to perform Hajj on behalf of others or whose location is within the Miqat, usually perform Ifrad Hajj. In addition, some pilgrims perform Qiran Hajj, but their number is very insignificant.

Hajj Qiran: Entering Ihram from the Miqat with the intention of performing Umrah and Hajj simultaneously is called Qiran Hajj. Kiran pilgrims must first perform Umrah upon reaching Mecca. Then they must wait for Hajj in the state of Ihram and remain in the state of Ihram until they offer the sacrifice of thanks on the 10th of Zilhaj. It is Sunnah to perform Tawaf-e-Kudum in the case of Kiran Hajj. Therefore, a pilgrim should perform Tawaf-e-Kudum at any time between Umrah and Hajj; if possible, he should also perform Sa’i.

It should be remembered that if a Kiran Hajj performs Sa’i along with Tawaf, he does not have to perform Sa’i again after the obligatory Tawaf of 10th Zilhaj. Because, it is obligatory to perform Sa’i once in the rules of Umrah and Hajj. Apart from this, the rules of Hajj from 8th Zilhaj to 12th Zilhaj are the same for all pilgrims. Hajj Ifrad: Entering Ihram from the Miqat only with the intention of Hajj is called Ifrad Hajj. Ifrad Hajj will wait for Hajj after reaching the holy Mecca in the state of Ihram. Then, before the main Hajj begins, perform the Sunnah Tawaf-e-Kudum on any day, and if possible, also perform Sa’i. Like the Kiran Hajj, if you perform Sa’i with Tawaf-e-Kudum, you do not have to perform Sa’i after the obligatory Tawaf of 10 Zil Hajj. The remaining rules of Hajj from 8 Zil Hajj to 12 Zil Hajj are the same for everyone. The only difference is that after throwing pebbles on 10 Zil Hajj, the Kiran and Tamattu pilgrims have to perform the obligatory part of Hajj by performing Shukriya, i.e., sacrifice, but the Ifrad pilgrims do not have to perform the sacrifice.

Hajj Tamattu: Wearing Ihram from the Miqat only with the intention of Umrah, reaching the holy Mecca and performing Umrah, taking off Ihram, waiting for Hajj in a normal state, and completing Hajj by wearing Ihram on 8 Zil Hajj is called Tamattu Hajj. From 8th to 12th of Zilhaj, all the rules of Tamattu Hajj are the same as those of Kiran and Ifrad Hajj. However, the difference is that Tamattu Hajj does not have Tawaf-e-Qudum like Kiran and Ifrad.
