THE VIRTUES OF HAJJ

Pilgrimage to the House, like prayer, fasting and zakat, is obligatory upon those who are able. Allah the Almighty says, “And pilgrimage to the House is obligatory upon mankind for those who are able to travel there. And whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Free from the needs of the worlds.” (Aal Imran 3:97 ) This is the main evidence for the obligation of Hajj.[1] He also said, “And complete the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then offer whatever is easy for you from the provision.” (Al-Baqarah 2:196) This verse requires that Hajj be obligatory as well as Umrah, which is the opinion of most of the Companions and scholars.[2] Elsewhere, he said,

And proclaim to mankind the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass, that they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of sacrificial animals.

“And proclaim the Hajj to the people. They will come to you on foot and on every kind of (travel-weary) camel, from far and near, so that they may come there for their own good (in this world and the Hereafter), and may mention the name of Allah over them on the appointed days over the cattle which He has provided for them.” (Al-Hajj 22:27-28) These verses clearly indicate that Hajj is obligatory.
